The Watchmen is a society of manly Christian honor. The things we do could be done on your own, but they are best done in a group—especially a group consisting of men under pastoral care, covenanted together for life together as a body. Participation is not required to be right before God. Yet for some people, for some seasons, committed honor groups can be beneficial and help us to discipline our lives and be more useful to our community. We ask that men commit to the Watchmen at least a quarter at a time (Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sept, Oct-Dec). It will work best for conferences (small discussion groups) if people are not popping in and out.

Two Basic Commitments

At its heart there are two basic commitments to being a Watchman:

Watchmen commit to meet for manly fellowship, singing, instruction, and inspiration. Watchmen meet on Monday evenings from 7-9. During the first hour, they pursue critical development through instruction, reading, and discussion. Young men have many things they need to learn if they are to become virtuous, godly, and skilled enough to lead a household.

Watchmen commit to weekly conferencing. Conferencing is a very old practice among Christians of meeting together to discuss matters of sin, truth, and righteousness for the purpose of growing more like Christ. The Puritans went to church faithfully, but also met regularly for conferencing outside of church. What happens in conferences is typically dependent on how the week went: It might involve confession or thanksgiving, discussion of some need for wisdom, or even just a few words of grief.“ Christians need to not only hear truth, but they need to articulate it to one another—regularly.

Conferences are not the only opportunity to do that, but they are a good, and most importantly, deliberate time to do that.

Watchmen Plan for 2023:

In quarter 1 we will read the first part of Communion with the Triune God by John Owen. This book is a wonderful overview of the spiritual life with God. It is no use attempting to overcome sin without also drawing near to God.

In quarter 2 Brittain Brewer will lead us through various issues related to technology and discipleship. Technology can be a useful tool in God’s kingdom, but too often it is a harmful hinderance to spiritual growth.

In quarter 3 we will read the second part of Overcoming Sin and Temptation by John Owen: On Temptation. This book has been life-changing for many. You think you know all there is to know about temptation—I guarantee you will learn much.

In quarter 4 we will read a biography of a young man who gave his all for Christ: David Brainerd. This is the quarter we focus particularly on prayer, and Brainerd’s journal is a powerful example of a man living daily by faith in God through prayer.

Additionally, we have a fellowship event each quarter. In quarter 1, we do a winter campout.
